The Way It Is/Voices
…. In this week’s ‘On The Turntable’ program we are diggin’ deep into the 80’s vinyl vault and bringing you an outstanding debut with The Way It Is from ‘Bruce Hornsby and The Range’ and ‘Hall & Oates’ Voices’ … the album that spring boarded their full blown focus on Pop Music.
The Way It Is
‘The Way It Is’ is Bruce Hornsby and the Range’s debut album, released in 1986, although the album does not sound like a debut album. The band sounded like they had been doing this for years. It helped the group to win the Grammy Award for The Best New Artist. The title track topped the Billboard 100 and led to two other singles being released, all topping the top 20.
The album was co-produced by Huey Lewis, a fact that I was not aware of until prepping for this upcoming program. Lewis is also featured on harmonica and vocals on “Down The Road Tonight”. The LP reached number three on the Billboard 200 and has sold over three million copies … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers ‘The Way It Is’ to be the 81st best album of 1986 and the 798th of the decade. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 22nd on its Top 100 of the Year list.
Notable Tracks – ‘Every Little Kiss’ ‘Mandolin Rain’ ‘The Way It Is’ ‘On The Western Skyline’
Voices
Voices is the 9th studio album by the duo Daryl Hall & John Oates. The album was released this very week in 1980 and is LP that broke the ice for Hall & Oates has masters of ‘the pop hit’ and making them the most successful duo of the 1980’s. It all came to together on Voices; the album slowly became a massive hit, spawning four singles into the Top 40 singles chart, including the #1 record “Kiss On My List.”
This was the first album that the duo produced themselves. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Voices #80 on it’s Greatest 80 Albums of 1980. The disc topped the Billboard 200 at 17th. Here’s something you might find surprising ; the lp spent 100 weeks on the chart, more than any other album that Hall & Oates has released. It has been certified platinum … Yet, Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers the album to be 151st best of 1980. SMH
