Fair Warning/Don’t Say No
Two hard-rocking 80’s LPs turn the Big 4-0 this week. Van Halen’s ‘Fair Warning’ and ‘Don’t Say No’ from Billy Squier. You can catch both, played in their entirety, each side uninterrupted during the On The Turntable program this Saturday and Sunday ….
Fair Warning
Fair Warning is the fourth studio album by Van Halen. Released April 29, 1981. It sold more than two million copies, but was still the band’s slowest-selling album of the David Lee Roth era … and there is a reason for that … this album is not a fun album. It did not have the party feel that was apparent on the three preceding LPs. And, despite the disappointing sales … the critical reviews were mainly positive.
Fair Warning was listed by Esquire Magazine as one of the ’75 Albums Every Man Should Own’. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers ‘Fair Warning’ to be the 30th best album of 1981 and the 317th best of the decade. It also ranked the lp 195th in its All-time 200. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 61st on it’s Top 100 of the year … though the lp is not as much fun as its predecessors, it is not dull.
Notable Tracks – ‘Mean Street’ ‘So This Is Love?’ ‘Unchained’
Don’t Say No
The second selection On The Turntable is also celebrating 40 years since its release … ‘Don’t Say No’ is the second studio album from Billy Squire … This is Squier’s biggest career LP. Following the success of his debut album Squire came out swinging for his second. The album starts with “In The Dark” ‘The Stroke” and “My Kind Of Lover” … each song became a staple on Rock Radio in 1981.
‘Don’t Say No’ reached the top five on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 111 consecutive weeks. The album has sold over three million copies and is considered his best. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers ‘Don’t Say No’ as the 67th best LP of 1981 and the 565th best of the decade …Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 38th in its Top 100 of the year.
