Mistaken Identity/Time Exposure
On The Turntable will spotlight 1981 this weekend and feature two long players that are celebrating 40 years since their release … the program will start with ‘Mistaken Identity’ from Kim Carnes and follow that with ‘Time Exposure’ from The Little River Band. Both albums will be played in their entirety … each side uninterrupted.
Mistaken Identity
Mistaken Identity is the sixth studio album by Kim Carnes, released in April 1981. It was one of 1981’s biggest albums and produced Billboard’s number-one song for the entire year, “Bette Davis Eyes”. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album spawned three singles, “Bette Davis Eyes”, “Draw of the Cards” and the title track … I hope you can enjoy this 40th anniversary spin from one of my favorite female voices.
Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers this the 281st best LP of 1981 … Now, the album spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, delivered the #1 single of 1981 and was nominated for a Grammy Award … yet they find 280 albums that are better than this one … I am not buying it. Digital Dream Door gives the album much more love ranking it 40th on its Top 100 of 1981 list … I love this album … The Mistaken Identity Tour found Carnes at the peak of success, selling out arenas and large venues. I saw the tour at the Winter Garden in Dallas in the summer of 1981 … The show rocked … Mistaken Identity should have established Kim Carnes as a huge international star … to the likes of Olivia, Linda, Tina and Grace … It is a fickle business.
Notable Tracks – ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ ‘When I’m Away From You’ “More Love’
Time Exposure
Time Exposure is the sixth studio album by Little River Band …. This album was recorded with producer George Martin at AIR Studio in Montserrat and released in August 1981. The album peaked at No. 9 on the Australian Albums Chart, and reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200 in the US. Time Exposure delivered three top twenty singles … Night Owls, Take It Easy On Me and Man On Your Mind.
Here’s and interesting tid-bit … I told you earlier that I saw the Kim Carnes tour 40 years ago at the Wintergarden in Dallas … I saw the tour for this LP a few month later at the same venue … I hadn’t given that a thought until preparing for this week’s program … Time Exposure did not deliver the platinum success of Sleeper Catcher and First Under The Wire, but did become certified gold. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Time Exposure to be the 242nd best album of 1981 … ahead of Mistaken Identity … still scratching my head.
Notable Tracks – ‘Take It Easy On Me’ ‘The Night Owls’ ‘Man On Your Mind’
