The Yes Album/Face Value
The Yes Album celebrates 50 years since its release and On The Turntable will spin this gem, without interruption and follow that with Face Value from Phil Collins which will celebrate 40 years since its release.
The Yes Album
The Yes Album is the third studio album from Yes, released February 19, 1971. This is one of my favorite albums … It would easily rank in my top 50 … This album was a critical and commercial success. The band was on the verge of being dropped by Atlantic Records due to the disappointing performance of their first two albums. This was the first album to feature Steve Howe on guitar and the last to feature Tony Kaye on keyboards until his rejoining for the 90125 LP … I was fortunate to see this tour, my first of six Yes Concerts … Side one features my favorite Yes song …. Starship Trooper.
1971 was a very productive and pivotal year for Yes … later in the year … they would release ‘Fragile’, with a new line-up and consequently, deliver two albums in the top 25 for the year. We will feature Fragile ‘On The Turntable’ in November … The Yes Album would go on to make it in three different books of lists … 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, 1,000 Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die and was also listed at 317 in Colin Larkin’s All Time Top 1000 Albums. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers The Yes Album to be the 22nd best of 1971 and the 108th best of the decade. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the LP 23rd on its top 100 list of the year.
Notable Tracks – ‘Starship Trooper’ ‘Yours Is No Disgrace’ “I’ve Seen All People’
Face Value
It just does not seem right that this album is celebrating 40 years since its release …. Face Value is the debut solo studio album by Phil Collins, released this past week in 1981. The album was released by Virgin Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in the US. This album began a solo career that followed with three more solo lps over the course of six years that were rewarded with platinum status and Grammy awards …. Face Value was an instant commercial success and has sold more than 5 million copies in the US alone. Side one begins with everyone’s favorite air drum song …
Many believed that the release of his first solo effort was long overdue and worth the wait … the LP delivered four singles and the sessions delivered four songs that subsequently ended up on future Genesis albums … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Face Value to be the 18th best album of 1981 and the 213th best of the decade. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album #12 on its list of the top 100 of the year. Face Value was also ranked #329 in Colin Larkin’s “All Time Top 1000 Albums.”
Notable Tracks – ‘In The Air Tonight’ ‘I Missed Again’ ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’
