The Man Who Sold The World/A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse
This weekend, On The Turntable will celebrate 50 years since the release of David Bowie’s ‘The Man Who Sold The World” – we will also feature “A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse” from Faces … It is also one of my favorite album titles …. ever!
The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by David Bowie. It was originally released by Mercury Records in the United States in November 1970. Though the lp contained no hits, it is regarded as the beginning of Bowie’s classic period of 1970-1973. Upon its release, the album was critically acclaimed in the U.S. but did not sell well until the 1972 re release following the success of Ziggy Stardust.
The Man Who Sold The World has been cited as inspiring goth rock by artists such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Gary Numan and Nine Inch Nails. Nirvana covered the title cut during a MTV special … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers The Man Who Sold The World as the 30th best lp of 1970 and the 205th of the 1970’s. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranks the album #76 on its Top 100 of 1970.
A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse
A Nod’s As Good As a Wink… to a Blind Horse” is the third album by the rock group Faces, and it was their second album of 1971. “Nod” was their most successful album peaking at #6 in the US and #2 in the UK …. The album also delivered their biggest US hit …”Stay With Me”…”Blind Horse” is regarded as their definitive album.
A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse …. It is the only lp, that I am aware of, that has the title continuing on the back of the album. This has always been one of my favorite album titles … The album made the Billboard Top Ten due to the strength of the single “Stay With Me” … however side two features two of my favorite Faces tunes … “Too Bad” and “That’s All You Need” – I was fortunate to see Faces on their last US tour in 1972 and it was one of the rockingest shows I have ever seen … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers “Blind Horse” as the 65th best lp of 1971, which seems low when you consider the album is also listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die … Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the lp #35 on their Top 100 List of 1971.
