This week’s ‘On The Turntable’ program is a real treat! We are digging deep into the vinyl vault to bring you albums celebrating 50+ years since their release … The program will begin with John Mayall’s ‘Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton’ and conclude with a 50th anniversary spin of ‘Survival’ from Grand Funk Railroad. As we promised … Some Blues & some Rock.
John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton
Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton is a studio album by the English blues rock band John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. The album pioneered a guitar-dominated blues-rock sound. The guitar that Eric Clapton used during these sessions was a sunburst 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard. This guitar was stolen in 1966; its whereabouts remain unknown.
Blues Breakers With Erick Clapton was Clapton’s midway stint between The Yardbirds and Cream and his first fully realized album as a blues guitarist. The LP was a critical and commercial success … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Blues Breakers to be the 18th best album of 1966 and the 152nd best of the decade. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 10th on it’s top 100 of the year list. The album was also listed in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” and Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Blues Breakers 195th on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time List.

‘Survival’ was the first of two albums to be released by the band in 1971; they would later release ‘E Pluribus Funk’ which featured “Footstompin’ Music” which was recorded during the ‘Survival’ sessions. Side two features another cover … The Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”.
