The official start of hurricane season is just a few weeks away. Researchers at Colorado State University are predicting a lighter-than-average Atlantic hurricane season for 2023. Hurricane season officially begins June 1st.

Researchers tell us water temperatures in the Eastern, Central, tropical, and subtropical Atlantic are above normal. Temperatures in the Caribbean are about Normal. This would seem to indicate a very active tropical season. The development of an El Nino is predicted to mitigate that.

CSU’s initial 2023 forecast predicts 13 named storms. They expect 6 to reach hurricane strength and 2 of those to be major. This year’s names are Arline, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harold, Idalia, Jose, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Phillipe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, and Whitney.
