Sticky Fingers/Aftermath
This weekend marks the 50th anniversary “The Zipper” – The most iconic album cover and Rolling Stones record in rock history. ‘Sticky Fingers’ was released this very weekend in 1971. We will follow that with a 55th anniversary airing of Aftermath. All during a Rolling Stones Weekend on The Rewind.
Sticky Fingers
Sticky Fingers is the ninth British and eleventh American studio album from the Rolling Stones, released this very weekend in 1971. It was the third LP from what is considered the best four lp stretch in Rock history. Sticky Fingers is also the first released on the band’s own label … Rolling Stones Records … and, it was Mick Taylor’s second full-length appearance on a Stones album … ‘Sticky Fingers’ is considered one of the Stones’ best records.
Aside from a couple of up-tempo songs like Brown Sugar and Bitch, the album has a back to basics, laid back feel laced with drug overtones … The album has been referenced in many books about Rock N Roll, including David Hempworth’s “Never A Dull Moment – 1971 The Year That Rock Exploded”, which by the way, I highly recommend, and “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.” Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Sticky Fingers to be the 4th best album of 1971 and the 17th best of the 70’s. Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 7th on its Top 100 of the year. Rolling Stone magazine positioned Sticky Fingers at 63 on its 500 Greatest of All Time List.
Notable Tracks – ‘Brown Sugar’ ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knocking’ ‘Wild Horses’ ‘Bitch’
Aftermath
Aftermath is the Rolling Stones’ fourth British and sixth American album released 55 years ago this month in the UK and July in the US. Considered by many to be an artistic breakthrough, Aftermath is the first Stones album to consist of entirely original material … Released just months before Dylan’s “Blonde On Blonde” and The Beatles “Revolver,” the album received favorable reviews and was a commercial success in both the UK and the US … Side one begins with one of my favorite Stones’ tunes … Paint It Black.
“I see a red door And I want it painted black …”
I have always liked that lyric. I read, somewhere a long time ago, that, in England, a red door signifies that the resident owns that particular home. Hmmmm.
Aftermath was considered by many to be the best Stones album to date, at the time of its release … It was the album that created their image as the Bad Boys of Rock N Roll; based on the misogynistic material that would, most likely, not pass the muster of today’s political correctness standards. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Aftermath to be the 5th best lp of 1966 and the 56th best of the 60’s … Digital Dream Door Dot com ranked the lp 7th on its top 100 of the year … Side two closes with what may be Rock’s first 11 minute song.
Notable Tracks – ‘Paint It Black’ ‘Under My Thumb’ ‘Stupid Girl’ ‘Going Home’
